How to Use Your Fashion Blog to Get a Job

use your fashion blog to get a job

A few weeks ago I shared my NYC survival story to people who are on my email list, (if you’re not on it, you’re missing out on serious insight). It wasn’t really a survival story but I did almost end up homeless and unemployed. I had one month’s rent left and I know I needed to make moves, and make them fast. I applied to countless jobs in fashion and never heard anything back. I had actually applied to my current job for other positions before too which never panned out. Now I know why. If I can do it, you can use your fashion blog to get a job, too.

I never included my blog on my resume before. I thought it might hurt my chances, reveal too much, or be silly. Since landing a job in fashion, I couldn’t be more wrong. In today’s world, it’s silly not to have a blog especially if you’re trying to get into fashion. In fact, it’s almost required you have one. A blog is the new resume for fashion.

I hadn’t really been looking for a job until recently so I had no idea that unconventional forms of experience were “allowed” and considered credible. I mean, when I think about it, I’ve done a lot, like a lot a lot. I’ve come a really long way with my blog/business and it’s something I don’t speak about too often because I see so much room for improvement and areas I want to grow.

Part of the reason I keep blogging is because I love the challenge, the whole thing is so fascinating to me. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling this, which is why I think bloggers deserve much more credit than they get. Blogging is a full-time, multi-skill job that requires patience, self-discipline, and motivation and something you should absolutely put on your cover letter and resume when trying to get a job.

Having a blog ultimately shows an employer 3 things: your hustle, your skills, and your credibility.

your blog shows you can hustle

“Hustle” seems to be a buzzword in the blogging and entrepreneur world nowadays and I’m loving it.

Every employer wants a hustler, regardless of the field. They want to know you’re dedicated and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

If you’re a fashion blogger, you know you can hustle. That’s all style blogging is. Bloggers do the PR, marketing, editing, photos, video, social media, statistics, and negotiating. Your job never ends, there is always something you can be doing and if you want to be a successful fashion blogger… you hustle!

It is a lot for one person to handle. If you can handle being a blogger you can handle anything.

blogging forces you to be a jack-of-all-trades

Because I’ve had to wear so many hats through blogging, I’ve developed a ton of skills that have translated to every industry I’ve ever been in. Tech, advertising, branding, email marketing, social media, graphic design, etc. are just a few skills you learn through blogging.

Tech is one of the easiest to obtain and most transferable because almost every company uses some form of tech for their business. Practice is the only tool that you need if you want to be tech savvy.

Marketing and advertising (branding, email, social media) is another story. Marketing, in my opinion, is the hardest skill to master and I chip away at this every day. There is no fast track to marketing. You can’t buy anything that will instantly make you a good marketer. Marketing requires experience, trial and error, and a method that is unique to you and your audience. So it’s best to figure out what that is quickly, so you can capitalize on it before consumers’ attention goes somewhere else.

Had I not sat on Google for hours on end, read up on blog tips, implemented different marketing techniques, and observed other bloggers/entrepreneurs, I never would have gotten half the jobs I’ve had. Teaching myself all these different things was the best decision I ever made.

your blog gives you credibility

Going above and beyond is key when you’re trying to get a job. Employers want to see something tangible you’ve done or maintained that validates you’re the right candidate for the job. A blog is the perfect opportunity to show off your talents and experience.

If you’re trying to get a job as a fashion photographer, it doesn’t get much better than blogging. The same goes for wanting to be a fashion designer, editor, stylist, etc.

Blogging isn’t just limited to the fashion industry either. There are teacher blogs, fitness blogs, branding blogs, beauty blogs, you name it there’s a blog for it. So really it doesn’t matter what field you’re trying to get a job in, with a blog, you’re set regardless. How cool is that?

Hi Brittany! As I was reading your another one of your posts this one caught my eye at the end. I am currently transitioning my career and I have been applying to so many jobs, and yes the thought of putting my blog on my resume came to mind. How should I title myself on my resume? Should I say Editor-In-Cheif or maybe Content Creator?…I just need a small push in that direction so that I can title my experience in the best way possible.

Cant wait to hear from you!! 🙂
