A breakup is sort of like the New Year, it’s the perfect time to wipe the slate clean and start over. The only difference is the New Year usually doesn’t bring all the desperation and/or revenge that a breakup does.
We’ve all been there, and if you haven’t… you will be. It really sucks at first, but when you’re “on to the next one”, the next one is usually 10 times better than the last so don’t worry.
It’s no surprise that when you experience a breakup you’re on this kick where you want to look super hot. This entails a new hairdo, gym membership, posting more pictures on Instagram and Facebook, going out more, and maybe starting a fashion blog to show it allllllll off so you can be known as “the one that got away”.
Then one of two things happen: you don’t get the results you want so you go into self-pity and completely let yourself go OR you discover a whole new aspect of yourself and create a killer life. (<Um, yeah we’re going to be talking about that one.)
Assuming you are at that place of self-loathing… get it together homegirl. There are so many ways to use a breakup to your advantage so pick yourself up and let’s go!
Here are some common and super easy ways to get out of the breakup blues…
It’s both common and cliche for a girl to make physical changes to her appearance after a breakup, especially to her hair. But if it helps get the ball rolling for bigger and better things then by all means, go for it, girlfriend!
The way I think of it is: new hairdo + ton of compliments = confidence boost/higher self-esteem #winning.
New hair, new you, right?
The second most cliche thing for girls to do after a breakup is start to workout. Working out is great in general, but working out after a breakup is even better because emotions are high and you push yourself a little harder than you would otherwise.
You can release all your frustrations and get hot while doing it, what a deal! Who knows… you may even discover a passion for fitness and decide to become a personal trainer.
Typically when you’re in a relationship you fall into a pattern of staying home, ordering takeout, and only hanging out with your significant other. In other words, your social life goes down the drain.
But when you go through a breakup, you can spark up your social life again. Going out more and getting involved in your community keeps your mind from throwing yourself a pity party.
Being social brings about opportunities you may not have known existed prior to your relationship. You could make connections that could help you professionally and/or personally.
Starting a blog is hands down the best thing I ever did. It taught me self-discipline, increased my confidence, and allowed me to show off my talents and help people along the way. Breakup or not you should 100% have a life or some sort of hobby outside of work. It’s healthy and it gives you a purpose.
Not to mention the opportunities that come from a side hustle are endless. In fact, Arielle from Something Navy created her blog because of a breakup. And if you’re as big of a stalker as I am you’ll know that she has grown it into a full-blown business and has almost a million Instagram followers. How amazing is that?
So, as you can see all is not lost if you’re experiencing a breakup. Some of my best moments came about during and after my breakups. And if I didn’t go through my breakups I wouldn’t be the person I am today, duh!
Tell me if you’ve ever used a breakup to your advantage in the comments below!
