I had my first taste of fashion week in February when I went to my first “event” and got to hang with other bloggers both big and small. I can honestly say it was the only event where I actually made meaningful connections I still keep in contact with today. So even though I’m not the biggest fan of networking events, every once in a while you get a good one.
Unfortunately, from my experience, bloggers are only “attracted” to other bloggers with the same following. It’s like a secret industry hierarchy where if you don’t have 50k followers you most likely won’t be hanging with bloggers who have 50k followers (let me know your take on this in the comments!). I will say the smaller the following, the easier it is to hang with bloggers a bit bigger than you.
For example, if you have 900 followers and a fellow blogger has 3,000 you’ll most likely be able to collaborate and be friendly with that blogger. But if a blogger has 100,000 followers and you can’t benefit him/her in any way, you probably won’t be invited to do a photoshoot anytime soon. Notice I say probably, and most likely – this is just my personal experience and that doesn’t mean this is 100% true 100% of the time.

Fashion week is very much like The Devil Wears Prada meets Clueless. You’ll hear phrases like “so good”, “I can’t even”, and “How cute is this ::insert person/place/thing here::?”. And yes I am guilty of saying some of those too if you follow me on Snapchat (notanothrblonde) you know what I’m talking about. And yes it is just as glamorous and hectic as it’s portrayed.
Anyways, I always thought it was kind of corny to wear the designer you were going to see during fashion week but apparently it’s norm (most bloggers get paid to do it now). And unless you’re having “fittings” aka getting stuff for free or at least stuff to borrow, then you’re SOL at the Zimmerman show since the average person isn’t going to drop $1,000 on a dress only to wear it once.
While the fashion industry (especially during fashion week) can be very superficial, it is a great time to make connections. The key is confidence. Even if you’re a small blogger or simply someone wanting to break into the fashion world you must have confidence… No matter what. Sofia Amoruso can attest to this in #GIRLBOSS.
If you’re not in the front row you might as well not even go. The blogging world has become so mainstream now that most of them sit front row, even some of the models’ family members take a second row to bloggers.
Not to mention the closer you are to x,y,z celebrities the better. I can’t tell you how many Snaps I saw of big time bloggers trying to play it cool while “casually” Snapping celebrities.
Listen, we all get star struck, at least own it and admit you’re freaking out inside because that will make you more relatable to your followers. Every time I see a celebrity in NYC I am a fan girl through and through and it’s funny because I embarrass whoever I’m with. Fashion can be so fun so don’t ruin it by taking yourself or your encounters too seriously.
I briefly mentioned in this post the reasoning for me not attending any shows or events this season but next season I hope to really get in there and report back to you with new insight.
Have you ever gone to NYFW? What’s been your experience? Let’s chat in the comments.

10/05/2016 at 10:54 amLove this post and that youre being so honest!! I read some similar comments from german bloggers and it seems to be the same 🙂
But I love that you stay honest and that if youre starstruck you would admit it – I mean why not?!! 🙂 So anyways – love the points youre making here, and me (as a small blogger) can imagine that the blogger ones like to surround themselves with equals..
xxx and kisses from Berlin,
Tina.

10/05/2016 at 11:31 amThanks so much Tina! Yes, the bigger ones like to hang with “equals” but at the same time, can you blame them? I also do believe everyone should be given a chance and just because someone doesn’t have 100,000 followers doesn’t mean they’re not a master at other things pertaining to blogging. You should always treat everyone the same because you just never know. I’m sure those people who denied Oprah as a news anchor are kicking themselves now. 🙂
I hope you stay in touch! Looking forward to chatting again soon. Any questions or requests please let me know. xx

10/06/2016 at 10:43 amAh.. I am totally getting what you’re saying Brittany and I thought so that it would be pretty much like this! I have about 1,300 followers on instagram so I am hopeless hahaha! Just kidding, I don’t feel that way but I really understand that “attraction” to same following scale you are describing! It’s logical after all. Hope to be in the next fashion week in February, somewhere, maybe Paris! Hope to meet you one day! 🙂

10/07/2016 at 7:59 pmHaha I love your sense of humor Stella. There are power in smaller numbers too. Don’t be fooled. It’s about how strategic we can be and how we can build out using what we have. Having 1300 engaged followers is way more beneficial than 1 million disengaged followers. I hope we meet one day too! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Keep hustling! xx

10/06/2016 at 4:15 pmIt’s totally true what you say. I wrote a few times to +200K followers’ bloggers that were coming to Barcelona or Marbella and they didn’t even answer. But it’s true that doing collaborations with others that have a similar number is very beneficial to grow your own platforms!

10/07/2016 at 8:15 pmIt is frustrating isn’t it?! You can usually get an answer from the 60-100K following even if you are on the smaller side of just a few thousand. Collaborating with a bunch of smaller bloggers is a great alternative – more often than not their audience is more engaged anyway. Thanks so much for reading Maria. Can’t wait to hear from you again soon. xx
