Over the weekend I was browsing through old photos and cringing over my anything-but-classic style in my early years and what better way to share than by preventing you from making the same fashion faux pas as I have?! {P.s. Any opportunity to make fun yourself should be taken full advantage of. And this happens to be the case for this post…}
Buying clothing/shoes too small
Ugh, yes I am more than guilty of this. It’s comical considering today I buy almost all my clothes oversized and if something fits me juuuust right, I’m not interested.
You should not have to wiggle your way into jeans. You should be able to hug someone without feeling like something might tear. Your toes should not be numb when wearing shoes for an extended period of time.
Style rule: Buy outerwear, sweaters, boots, and button downs 1/2 – 1 size bigger.
Letting my CC follow the trends
This quite possibly might be the worst fashion faux pas anyone could make. I’ve spent wasted thousands, literally thousands of dollars on “trendy” clothes I’ve worn once or not at all, which is why I’ve adopted the smart shopping method.
Style rule: Buy what works for you, not everyone else.
Playing it safe
I’ve played it safe so much that I often don’t end up with enough new Instagram material to last me 7 days because I end up wearing the exact same outfit time and time again.
Switch it up, wear your favorite white T with a fancy skirt or trousers to add contrast. Wear destroyed denim with a tank and blazer for a casual polished look. I always find myself admiring people who do this.
Style rule: Experiment, experiment, experiment.
Being too “matchy matchy”
Matchy matchy is awful. Your blue shoes should not match your blue clutch should not match your blue blazer and blue bracelet. Woof. I see this too often and I want to shake the person asking whyyyyy?!
Matching or “color coordinating” an outfit requires no skill, anyone can do it. If you really want to wow people, think outside the box, like, ‘Ok, I’m wearing white and black here maybe I can add a pop of mustard’ or ‘Maybe I can tone down my blue stripes with a white sneaker and neutral bag’.
Style rule: If your shoes match your bag and your bag matches something you’re wearing… go change.
Having a ton of color in my wardrobe
This kind of goes with following the trends. Having too much color in your wardrobe will automatically limit you to how often you can wear something.
When I was in sixth grade every Friday I wore my pink, fuzzy Limited Too sweater. You know, the ones that were kinda small but then stretched to fit, yeah those. Anyways, I definitely got looks and comments about how I always wore that sweater. Had the sweater been grey or black would it have drawn as much attention? Probably not.
Style rule: If you want to keep a simple wardrobe and repeat outfits, stick to fashion’s prime colors: black, grey, white, nude.
Investing too much in accessories
I have had boxes and boxes full of unworn jewelry, hats, and bags. It actually makes me want to cry the amount of money I’ve wasted on trendy, high end bags and costume jewelry. Now I’ve finally narrowed my jewelry collection to one box and I always KISS before buying a new accessory.
Style rule: Think of 4 times you’ll actually wear an accessory before buying it.
What are your fashion faux pas? I’d love to hear them so comment below or email me brittany@notanotherblonde.com.
