Next in line to vision boards, Himalayan salt lamps, and tarot cards, are my beloved crystals.
Some of you might be thinking ‘but it’s just a rock’ and some of you may be rolling your eyes but hear me out…
Crystals are so much more that “just rocks”, they’re actually not rocks at all.
I’ve been obsessed with crystals since before I even knew what they represented. I was infatuated with Native Americans growing up and they always had dream catchers (something else I’ve used my whole life) and all kinds of “pretty rocks” so I started to collect both. I used to have bags and bags of rocks and crystals.
I just loved any mystic/majestical people and the Native Americans were that to me so I did whatever they did. I remember I would literally look for arrowheads in my grandparents’ driveway because I thought, ‘Well they’re old so their driveway has to be old too so I’m sure there are some arrowheads there from the 1800s!’ Now you can roll your eyes…
Anyway, crystals have and continue to play a big part in my daily life. They’re always around me and I’m always mindful of their powers, so let’s get into it…
a little crystal history
The first reference to crystals come from the Ancient Sumerians and Ancient Egyptians (of course the Egyptians were involved, they did all the cool stuff). First Egyptians used crystals in their jewelry and later to protect them from harm and heal their health. The women even added crystal elements to their make-up like eye shadow and the men would rub crystal powder all over their bodies before battle. How wild is that?!
A little later during the Renaissance period, crystals were used in combination with herbal cures for certain illnesses. In the 1200s crystals were recognized as “sanctified” and “consecrated” by royalty. Maybe this is where the craze came from…?
It wasn’t until the 1980s, that crystals went “mainstream” and began to surface as metaphysical healers. A few books came out that gained attention thus propelling the fascination. You would think this would have happened in the 60s or 70s since that was like, peace and love time, but 80s it is! Who knew?
the meaning of crystals
Obviously I can’t cover ever crystal, I mean I could but this post would be like, 8,000 words long and I don’t want to put you guys through that so I’ll just talk about my faves and what I use them for…
Agate
I have a flat Agate stone that I recently misplaced and I’m heartbroken over it but when I did know where it was I used it for protection from negative energy. Agate stones are great when you’re feeling unbalanced, conflicted, and/or overwhelmed. I recommend meditating and sleeping with this crystal, you can physically hold it or have it close by. Agate will give you the strength you need to conquer whatever is setting you off balance.
Amethyst
Amethyst is that beautiful purple crystal you see all over Instagram. It’s linked to the crown chakra which helps “purify the mind” for clarity and is said to decrease stress and anxiety when it comes to work. It’s also associated with abundance. Fun!
I have mine in my office to help me with difficult business decisions.
Clear quartz
Clear quartz is the stone you want for manifesting intentions. It’s a “programming” crystal meaning it picks up on the energy around it, (including positive and negative) so you want to make sure your crystal gets a good cleansing from time to time (we’ll get to that later).
Clear quartz is known to especially activate the crown chakra which expands consciousness and lifts negative perceptions and replaces them with positive ones. Pretty cool, huh? I mean you can never have enough positivity in your life.
Coincidentally this crystal is supposed to minimize the stubborn traits of Capricorns (I’m a Capricorn) and should be placed on a windowsill to pull in positive energy from the sun and moon.
Rose quartz
Though I don’t have a massive stone of the rose quartz I do have a small necklace which works just the same. In fact, I got the necklace when I found myself ready for a relationship.
In my early twenties I dove deep into my spirituality and meditated for 20 minutes twice a day, did yoga, started to re-collect crystals, etc. And honestly it was one of the happiest times in my life. I started to really love myself and from there I was able to let love in from other people. It all starts with you!
Anyway, I specifically picked a rose quartz necklace because a. it was pretty (of course) and b. it’s known as the “love stone”. Not only does it attract new love into your life but it helps you to forgive whether it be yourself or another person.
If you’re on edge with your partner or ready to welcome love into your life like I was, the rose quartz crystal is for you!
Jade
If you watch my Instastories you’ll know I’m absolutely obsessed with my jade roller! I use it every day, twice a day and for good reason.
Jade is known as the stone of “eternal youth”. Umm… yes please! It helps reduce puffiness and lymphatic drainage in your face and neck while increasing blood circulation which helps fight fine lines and wrinkles. Basically, this is every girl’s best friend, (even if you’re 18, start now!).
Aside from beauty benefits, Jade is the abundance and good luck crystal. If you want to use the stone to manifest more luck and prosperity into your life, hold it while you meditate on your intentions.
Shungite
I first learned about shungite from my girl Erica at Fashionlush. Shungite is basically the rock of the twentieth century because of its protective EMF properties. EMFs are electromagnetic fields that occur from electric radiation from our cell phones, laptops, etc. Putting your shungite on your phone, around your laptop, or near your microwave help block out the radiation. So if you’re a blogger or spend a lot of time on your electronics, consider getting some Shungite.
Shungite also helps with healing back pain, headaches, and inflammation. Basically it’s the health healer stone.
Tiger’s Eye
Tiger’s eye was another rock from my childhood. The sole reason I have a tiger’s eye is because I thought it was pretty, but once I learned what it actually represented, it made a lot of sense why I was drawn to it. Tiger’s eye is known as the “shape shifter” rock and helps ignite our passions and remove creative blocks. ::Amazon primes 100 tiger’s eye crystals:: Tiger’s eye help manifest goals and are the crystal for the dreamers (aka me).
It’s recommended to keep tiger’s eye on your nightstand for its powers to activate overnight and in your office of course.
how to use crystals
How you “use” crystals is up to you. Some people meditate with them in their hands or have them close by while doing so. Others strategically place them around the house where they want to attract certain things, (i.e. put rose quartz in your living room to improve familial bonding). I personally keep all mine in my office since that’s my creative space. I need stress relief, clarity, creativity, positive energy, and abundance in there so I just pile them all up on my desk.
As I mentioned earlier I use a jade roller every day on my face and you can do the same with any of these other crystals. You can lay down and put them on your body and absorb the energies or hold them in your hand while doing work, or wear them as jewelry so they’re always close to you. The options are endless!
The one thing to keep in mind is that crystals need “recharging”. For example, when my clear quartz absorbs my negative energy, stress, etc. it needs to gas up on positive energy and this is achieved by putting your crystals on your windowsill during a full moon (I wrote a whole post about full moons here).
