Boy oh boy, bet you never thought you’d hear me say love and loop giveaways in the same sentence, huh? For the longest time I was anti-loop giveaway. I frowned upon every blogger who did them and I strongly advised other bloggers not to do them… until now.
The other day I was doing my normal Instagram browsing and I came across one of those loop giveaway photos, you know, the “GIVEAWAY! MACBOOK PRO OR $1000 CASH PRIZE!” and I thought ‘ugh not again’ and then I looked at whose picture it was and it was one of my favorite bloggers! So then I was totally shocked and dumbfounded! Here is someone I looked up to as a businesswoman doing a cheesy loop giveaway, what is happening?!
Next, because of my inquisitive nature, I had to ask her what the deal was with the loop giveaway, so I sent her a DM. She basically blew my mind about why she does them and how they aren’t so bad after all. I was both shocked and inspired which led me to write this blog post arguing both sides of the loop giveaway controversy.
why I dislike loop giveaways
I’m going to get really real and be a little harsh for like 5 minutes so bear with me…
First and foremost loop giveaways seem desperate to me. In my opinion it’s a blogger’s attempt at getting more followers.
I also think they’re slightly misleading. Most of the captions are something like “I’ve partnered up with some of my favorite bloggers…”. Here’s my beef with that: you most likely have never had any contact with the girls you’re in the loop with. You may not have even heard of them. So to say you’ve partnered with some of your “favorite bloggers” just seems fake to me. Let’s call it like it is.
You’re doing this because it’s good marketing, not because you love the girls you’ve partnered with, which is fine… just own it.
I’m also not crazy about making your followers jump through hoops and to win a prize. It’s like you can win this brand new MacBook as long as you follow me, follow her, her, her, her, her, her, her, her, tag 50 friends, like this picture, repost this picture, use the hashtag, follow us on this other app… it’s exhausting.
But on the flip side…
why I love loop giveaways
While loop giveaways can be perceived as negative, they can also be seen in a positive light which I never thought of before I talked to that blogger.
Like I said before, loop giveaways are a marketing technique just like Facebook or Instagram ads. The people who engage with the loop giveaway choose to engage. They’re not being forced to enter, they’re not being tricked, they know they could win the prize and they know they could also not win the prize. There’s really nothing slimy or grimy about loop giveaways after all.
Plus, you pay to be in loop giveaways so just as your followers put in work to potentially win, you put in work too. So yes, you end up gaining some followers but these people aren’t forced to stay your followers, in fact, a few of them drop off after the giveaway is over (about 15-20%) and then the ones who stay were able to discover your kick ass blog. How cool is that?!
If you happen to do a loop giveaway, find a credible host (like me!) and make sure that host is strategic in partnering you with other bloggers who have a similar aesthetic or niche to yours. This way your follower retention will be higher (aka you’ll keep more followers from the giveaway than you would if you partnered with random bloggers unrelated to your field).
Most importantly, and the main reason why I love them now, loop giveaways are a way for bloggers to give back to their communities. Think about it, as a blogger we’re always asking for this, telling our audience to do that, so it’s only fair that we try to give to our followers as much as they give to us. As my blogger friend told me, ‘How cool would it be if one of my followers won?!’. Well yeah, that would be pretty cool, and something I never even thought of before.
Though, I still have reservations about some loop giveaways (you know, the scam-y ones), I am really loving giveaways in general and what they can do for your business. You can argue both sides but like I always say, testing is the best way to really know whether something works for you or not. For more info. on joining a legitimate loop giveaway, CLICK HERE.

05/30/2017 at 12:51 pmI feel the same about loop giveaways being an act of desperation, but I’ve been seeing more of my favorite bloggers doing them too! So it got me to thinking, maybe they’re not so bad after all? Your positive points make a lot of sense and I kind of want to participate in one for research purposes, haha!

05/30/2017 at 3:27 pmThat’s exactly what I was thinking Sheila! Well if you try one you’ll have to let me know how it goes and likewise, I’ll be the first to talk about how it worked for me if/when I try one. Thanks for reading love. xx

05/30/2017 at 1:05 pmI am so glad you presented both sides to how you view loop giveaways. I often found myself questioning how people viewed me and my brand because I would be apart of them so frequently. Then I just thought, I don’t care I am staying in my own lane and using this as a marketing tool. Like you said and how I view it as, is it doesn’t force anyone to do anything. If you want to be apart of it, that is your own choice. If you want to continue following me, that’s a new person of gained in my audience. A recently came across a macro-blogger who wrote a scathing post on Instagram about how loop giveaways discredit what bloggers/influencers are about. I don’t see it that way at all…I think loop giveaways are even more effective than buying an ad on Instagram or Facebook. Anyway, thank you Brittany for seeing both sides of it. 🙂

05/30/2017 at 3:33 pmWow… that’s so interesting DeAnna. Thanks for sharing that! Loop giveaways really are a love/hate thing. I think people who get upset by them are most likely frustrated by the ease at which other (sometimes less experienced) bloggers gain followers so quickly but times are changing and if you want to keep up with the times and stay relevant you have to adjust which may mean participating in a loop giveaway! I appreciate your honest comment as always, thanks for reading. xx

05/30/2017 at 1:22 pmGoodness, I also hate them. I also have an issue with the “favorite bloggers” gimmick – It seems insincere. However, I wouldn’t be closed-minded about doing one if I was actually working with my favorite bloggers, and as long as the list of bloggers to follow wasn’t extensive. Some of these loop giveaway participant lists are so lengthy, you end up giving up before you finish looping back around.

05/30/2017 at 3:36 pmI totally agree G, which is why I’ve put off doing one for so long! Maybe that’s something for you to look into… actually partnering with your favorite bloggers for a giveaway?! If you do try, please let me know how it goes! xx

06/01/2017 at 10:03 amI hate having to see the same picture 8 million times. That’s really the only thing that bothers me. but I do like the idea of giving back to your followers. and it’s not just like a gift card, it could be something super cool like a macbook!

06/01/2017 at 12:30 pmYes! Agreed Nikki. The repetitiveness is exhausting, but the reward, especially if it’s to one of your followers is pretty cool. Let me know if you ever do one! xx

06/04/2017 at 4:38 pmI’ll be honest, I stay away from loop giveaways. As a follower, I feel it’s too much of hard work to be honest(just like you said, it’s exhausting). From a bloggers’ point of view, I feel the same as you that most people will stop following once the giveaway is over.
It’s like going in circles for half an hour So i don’t pay attention to them. I feel like if you genuinely want to give back something to your followers then keep it simple and straightforward, Don’t make them slog for it (Sorry, if I’m being harsh)
But I guess there’s always 2 sides to a story and I might change my opinion about it but for now I’m not a big fan of it.
Brittany
06/05/2017 at 11:43 amI agree Rona, which is why I wrote the post to hopefully shed some light on them as they’re becoming more and more popular. Thanks for sharing your input! You weren’t being harsh by the way… I mean, I’m the queen of harsh! xx

07/26/2017 at 11:25 pmHi! I enjoyed your reading your post! I would like to share my experience with joining loop giveaways, and I have actually shared this to another blog. Still, I would love to share it with you and your readers – so please forgive me I just copy pasted it below – I don’t want to paraphrase it again (haha).
—- Well, I am guilty of joining those loop giveaways on Instagram, because who knows, I might win (haha). However, I am starting to lose interest (and trust) in them because today one IG user won in one of the giveaways I joined in, but she has already won another giveaway just two days ago (her total winnings are more than $1000 – if this is to be believed). I know I sound bitter and envious (haha!) but my point is, if this is an honest raffle/draw, she definitely has an insane amount of good luck. Even if she did a lot of options to increase her entries, it is still highly improbable that she wins the next giveaway. I am certain there are thousands of entries to be processed since this is a loop giveaway.
Oh well, if there are honest ones (true giveaways) out there, I’m sure there are scammers as well – those who take advantage of the fact that people cannot resist free items. That’s just mean and evil.

08/03/2017 at 11:45 amHi Maria thanks so much for sharing your experience! There is nothing wrong in participating from a follower’s standpoint but my point was that I had a love/hate relationship with loop giveaways from a blogger standpoint. Maybe that girl does have good luck or it is a scam, we’ll never know. That’s why blogger’s have to be careful to make sure they’re using a reputable source to host the giveaway. Typically the host picks a random winner through radompicker.com which selects a random username for you so maybe this girl was really chosen twice? Who knows! I appreciate your insight and thanks for stopping by! Hope you stay in touch. xx

11/27/2017 at 10:09 pm*Two sides to this**
I just turned down a loop
Giveaway for the same reason “favorite bloggers”??!
I only knew one of them and the funny thing we all are in the giveaway and most did not follow one another. Think it’s a bad look to begin with.
It seems really desperate and can become a turn off that followers do have to follow her her and her. Flip side I found a good friend /blogger I would do it with. “Just the two of us or maybe three . We know one another and its an organic social cohesiveness. And we will stay away from the MAC BOOK, Kylie lip color and iPhone prizes.

04/14/2019 at 5:23 pmI don’t know about that I once did ons and it didn’t got me anywehere. A lot of people that don’t engage with my pics anyway. So 1800 followers and 30 likes on a pic. I don’t think a brand i would wanna work with would like it. My opinion 😉
