How to | Shop Smarter & Save Money

DVF QUOTEFinallyyyy the post we’ve all been waiting for! I know I talk a lot about shopping smarter but I never actually told you how to implement this money saving machine. I found this awesome article on Who What Wear that said to limit yourself to 5 “trendy” pieces a season. Ok, that still sounds like a lot to me, so I’ve figured out how to shop smarter and save money! Before a new purchase, consider the following:

Create 2-4 different outfits to wear it with

This process is kind of amazing because as you’re thinking of things to wear with your new, totally awesome, must-have, can’t live without item, you’re also being your own stylist by putting together hypothetical outfits for the future, which is a HUGE time and money saver.

Is it a basic?

Make sure the item is black, white, beige, or grey, (sometimes blue). I have so many things from high school that I can still rock today, simply because of their color. Talk about money saver.

Basics usually entail blazers, plain tees, camis, trousers, skirts, and button downs. If your item doesn’t fit into the color and style category it ain’t a basic and you’re better off saving your money.

Another question to ask yourself is, ‘Will this still be in cool in 3 years?’ Think about all the trends that have come and gone, what pieces of clothing do you have from years ago that you still rock today? Buy more of those!

This one’s from Jill over at The August Diaries, (I actually interviewed her for my eguide). What a great concept. Be careful though! This tip is so good it can actually trick you into shopping more by thinking you’ll wear something 100 times when it’s more like 3 times.

 Sleep on it

For online purchases, I like to sleep on it and see if I find myself literally dreaming about the item then I know it’s a must-have. For in-store stuff, walk around a bit, put it on hold and go to another store and maybe you’ll find something better, or maybe not! I’ve saved myself a TON of money this way. There have been sooo many things I thought I needed. Turns out my eyes were bigger than my wallet and I’m so glad I didn’t get them.

Have anything else to add to the list? Tell me below!
