What Gary Vee Taught Me About Marketing (Part 2)

If you missed part 1 of What Gary Vee Taught Me About Marketing, go and read it now so you’re up to speed for these next nuggets of wisdom.

don’t wait for the next big thing

The next big thing is here, it’s happening right now. There’s no harm in wanting to be an OG on a platform that eventually takes off, but who’s to say it will actually ever take off? Not even Gary Vee can predict that, (but he does a darn good job most of the time).

So instead of sitting around waiting for the next “big thing”, be proactive on the tools already available to you like Snapchat (un:notanothrblonde), Instagram, Periscope, and Music.ly (un:notanotherblonde). Reinvent the wheel or make it better by doing what everyone else isn’t.

learn to say no

Learning to say no is one of the best decisions you can make for your blog/business. Ever heard of the saying “staying on brand”?

Well, when you say yes to every opportunity and collaboration you’re offered it usually takes you as far away from your brand as possible. People get used to seeing you in a certain way, with a certain voice, that attracts a certain audience. Saying yes to everything will turn your following from solid to scattered real quick.

For example, if you’re a fashion blogger who only blogs about denim, then you suddenly switch to blogging about beauty products, you’ll have a pretty confused readership who will drop like flies. They don’t want beauty product reviews, they want your insight on all things denim.

accept your shortcomings

Every well-known public figure has shortcomings. And they either ignore them or embrace them. In fact, if they’re smart, people will capitalize on their shortcomings, like Oprah, Tony Robbins, Kanye West, and of course Gary Vee. So think about ways you can use your shortcomings to your advantage.

Are you dyslexic? Are you on a journey to healthy eating? Are you broke? Do you talk too much?

grab attention & build trust

Once you’ve owned your shortcomings, you can use that as leverage to grab people’s attention and gain their trust. Gary Vee can be seen as over the top but he doesn’t ask for much. He makes a big splash on social media because he’s over the top and then provides tons of killer quality content… for free.

Because he delivers consistent high quality content for free, he’s built his following’s trust. We know he won’t tell us to do something if he didn’t do it or believe it himself. So when he tells you to get his new book, you’re gonna’ buy the book!

His secret? He gives more than he asks for… always. That is the key to grabbing attention and building trust.
