February is my least favorite month for a few reasons: it’s cold, it goes by too fast because it’s short, and I think Valentine’s Day is silly. On that positive note, I really wanted to find something I liked about this month and this year I found it in my outfits. As always, the outfits below are super practical (except maybe those pom pom shoes) and you can mix and match each piece separately, which is exactly what I do every day.
Background: We were dodging cars for a good 10 minutes in the rain before we actually captured “the shot”. I was determined though because I really loved my outfit.
Why it works: You really can’t go with any monochromatic look. The jacket is a statement piece without being overly obnoxious, the sweater is perfectly oversized where you can get away with wearing it with leggings, and the leggings have faux leather detail which elevates the whole look. Also, the black heeled booties elongate your legs making you look sleek and chic… corny but true!
Background: The guys behind me stared the whole time which made me feel right in my element as I’m used to people staring at me… for all the wrong reasons! I’m usually dancing erratically, tripping, or my fly is down. Though, none of that was happening this time so I’m not sure why I was getting looks. It’s NYC, on every other block is a blogger posing, you would think they’d be used to it by now.
Why it works: I originally had a scarf on but because the coat has so much fabric in itself, my outfit was drowned out by the scarf so I took it off. I went for a pretty basic look here: black and grey. Usually when I have a statement coat like this, I tend to keep things pretty simple which draws more attention to the coat.
Background: The sun was setting and the lighting wasn’t ideal, but it worked. After I was frozen my photog (Riri, who’s always in my Snaps), informs me there’s a distracting hair out of place… awesome. (Comment below if you see it!)
Why it works: I have a lot of textures and colors happening which gives the outfit a downtown NYC vibe (always the goal). The contrast works really well because it’s interesting, (the blue fuzzy sweater with black coated jeans and sleek silver boots). Had I gone with an all black look or at least a more subtle boot, the outfit would have been pretty basic and boring. It’s a unique look without being over the top.
Background: This was the crazy, global warming, 60 degree weather day we had the other day so I actually wasn’t freezing for once. The lighting was on point and so were my shoes.
Why it works: This whole look is very dramatic. Drama bell sleeves, drama wide leg pants, and a dramatic furry pom pom shoe. Both “Dusty rose” and pom poms are super popular this season but not something I would necessarily wear. So, I stepped (no pun intended) outside my comfort zone yet I still stayed true to my style and kept the rest of my outfit muted with a grey top and black pants.
Background: I forgot sunglasses that day so my photog lent me hers. At first I felt like I had a unibrow but then I fell in love with them, (linked below).
Why it works: I would usually advise against going with an outfit that’s all one color. Matchy matchy is not cute. However, if there’s lots of texture and vastly different shades of the same color, it works.
