For whatever reason influencers, bloggers, and vloggers alike think brands just care about the numbers. Followers are more likely to follow people with a large following because it makes them seem more legit so how do the little guys like you and me get ahead? Well, you need to turn whatever following you do have into paying customers and figure out why your numbers don’t matter. Let me explain…
large numbers do not equal a large paycheck
The whole purpose of marketing and advertising is sales which is why your numbers don’t matter. I think I’ve said this before on Snapchat (un: notanothrblonde) that you could have 1 million Instagram followers or get 500,000 monthly pageviews but unless those numbers convert into paying customers/sales, you got nothing.
Brands want tangible results. Brands want to work with influencers who have the power, or influence, to get their followers to buy.
The whole reason brands work with bloggers is for the word to spread about the brand’s product as organically as possible. And brands see that people buy from people they admire, (hello Kylie Lipkits).
Traditional advertising is out and content marketing is in. (Yes, I’ll do an entire blog post on content marketing.)
you can prove your worth without the stats
The Secret Blogger’s Business is run by the same person (Kate) who runs Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily. DDG rakes in a few hundred thousand pageviews per month whereas SBB’s following is much smaller.
In fact, the SBB Instagram only has around 10K and DDG’s has 23K. So wouldn’t it make more sense for DDG to be making more money? You would think…
So Kate makes the majority of her money through SBB, like more than you would think, which is proof that stats don’t matter.
When brands look for bloggers or influencers to work with they want to someone who can sell. Let’s look at my boo Lauryn from The Skinny Confidential…
Again, she’s someone who just hit 200K followers on Instagram and is constantly busy collaborating and working on different projects left and right. In fact, she’s one of the busiest bloggers I know that’s actually busy. And she’s figured out why your numbers don’t matter.
Sure, you see other bloggers on Snapchat running around and going to previews but are they really doing meaningful work and improving people’s lives or are they just getting free clothes? Hmm…
So my point is this: if you can prove your worth, you’re in. Stop focussing on your numbers and focus on quality and sales.

04/30/2016 at 1:43 pmGreat post Brittany! I started blogging about a year ago while working full-time and it’s hard to do things at the same speed as someone that does blogging full-time, so things are slow but going the right direction! I also have a year old daughter and not enough free time! It’s great to hear that numbers don’t matter, but quality (and passion I guess?)
Just found your blog but will definitely keep reading 🙂

04/30/2016 at 3:02 pmWow, that’s amazing Danielle! Good for you! Numbers do matter to a degree – in sales not on your social media platforms. You could have thousands of followers that don’t buy or you could have say, one thousand followers that do buy. That’s what matters. And slow is just fine. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Good luck doll! 🙂

05/01/2016 at 1:29 amVery useful post! I’m basically reading your whole blog now and I found you through Zanita where you talked about working full time and blogging. I’m trying to do the same and sometimes that’s hard! I’m pretty new though…

05/01/2016 at 9:19 amThanks Anamika! That’s too funny. I’ve found time management to be my new best friend. It only took me 5 years! Don’t get down on yourself if things don’t pan out right away, just make little efforts every day and you will succeed. xx
