With all the hype around the new Instagram update, now is the perfect time to talk about why your blog is more important than Instagram. A lot of people are outraged by the change and for good reason. Now we have to search each person whose feed we want to see if we don’t comment or like their pictures obsessively. Yes it’s annoying but there’s a silver lining, I promise.
If you’re a dedicated, hardcore blogger, Instagram’s update should be your last concern. Building a business should be your first concern and while Instagram helps to do that, it shouldn’t be the foundation for which you build on. Change is inevitable and social media updates are going to happen, but if you’ve run your blog the “right way” then you’ll know why your blog is more important than Instagram and if you still need some convincing, read on.
your blog will never change
Your blog will never change unless you change it. You have complete control over your blog because you own it, you built it, and you can do whatever you want with it! Any updates your blog goes through will be because you authorized it. Change is only bad when it happens unexpectedly and you have little time to prepare, (and life gives us plenty of that as it is!). But when it comes to your blog you’ll always be prepared for any changes that do come.
You never know what’s going to happen with Instagram since it’s owned by a third party. Even if its users protest change and are totally outraged, it may slow the process down but the updates will still happen because you know why? We cry, we complain, then we get over it and still use the platform!
At the end of the day, Instagram is a business and businesses need to make money. The only way for businesses to continue to make money, (or make more money), is through change.
Now, people are going to pay for Instagram ads to get their content seen by their followers and then some. It’s actually super smart on Instagram’s part and we shouldn’t be mad at them for finding creative ways to make money. We all gotta eat!
social media comes & goes
Remember Xanga, MySpace, and Livejournal? If you don’t it’s because social media comes and goes so quickly it’s almost impossible to keep up.
And Instagram will be added to the list at some point I’m sure, along with Facebook, Snapchat, and Periscope. But for now, we can enjoy and utilize them while they last.
My point is this: if you put all your eggs in one basket and wake up one day to realize the social media platform you invested in is no longer there, you’re SOL. The best way to stop it is by investing more in your blog than Instagram. That’s not to say you should half-ass your Instagram, not at all! Your Instagram is a reflection of you so it should express that to your followers. I’m saying if you’re one of those Instagram stars the sooner you start a blog to back your pretty pictures, the better.
What would you do if Instagram went away tomorrow? Where would your business be?
Most of us would say our businesses would be mediocre and we’d have to find another platform to dominate, which takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. When your blog is your main place of business, you don’t have to worry about the future of social media because your website gets enough traffic, sales, etc.
your instagram followers are fake
Ok, not all of them, but it’s unlikely you have a 100% authentic, active, engaged audience. There are bots (robots) out there and you do have some following you for whatever reason.
Plus, if you’ve ever done a giveaway on your Instagram that gained an absurd amount of followers, odds are the host actually bought fake followers for everyone which does absolutely nothing for you or your brand. (SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT: Email me to join a high-quality, highly targeted US giveaway brittany@notanotherblonde.com!)
Let’s say you’ve somehow managed to weed out all your bot accounts, there are still some Instagrammers that will follow you simply for a follow back. Yuck.
These people follow you to get your attention, hope for a follow back, and if you don’t give it to them they instantly unfollow you and do the whole thing again in a few weeks. It’s a sneaky little game that a lot of people, especially bloggers/entrepreneurs, play to try and get ahead. Spoiler alert: There is no fast track to success.
The same thing can happen with comments and likes. Some people only comment on your Instagram for a comment back, sadly. I would say 8 times out of 10 the people who comment “So cute babe!”, don’t actually mean it. The ones who do mean it are the ones who are responding to your caption with something other than a generic phrase. (Blog tip: Leave authentic comments on other blogger’s accounts if you want authentic comments back. That’s how true connection is formed.)
Key takeaways: What it really comes to is that Instagram, and any other social media platform, is there for people to build brand awareness, not to build a business. Social media adds to our businesses without a doubt, but it should not be the only way our businesses survive.
What’s your take on the new Instagram algorithm? Tell me about it below!

07/05/2016 at 10:42 amI find myself in a constant tug of war between effort on my actual blog, and my social media channels, thanks for the insight as usual 🙂

07/07/2016 at 6:52 amYou’re not alone Jazmin! We all feel that way. It’s a give and take, but I still stand behind in saying your blog is most important. Social media is also really important because that’s what drives people to your blog but once they’re on your blog, give them something to remember so they keep coming back for more. Thanks for reading. xx

07/30/2016 at 12:40 pmI really needed this post!
As of now, I am receiving more engagement on my social channels than my actual blog. It was totally different two years ago when my blog was the main place for engagement.
We all remember when readers would leave a comment on our blog with a follow for follow request for Google reader right? Those days are over and they have moved to Instagram Still to me my blog is my baby, where I can be creative, write my thoughts and share a full post with a story in photos. I would never give it up for any social media channel. Thanks so much for this reminder Brittany!

08/29/2016 at 4:16 amI found this post so… comforting 🙂 I started my blog very recently and I don’t have thousands of followers on social media but I put in a lot of effort in my website and I’m really proud of it and what it’s becoming. That’s why I found it so uplifting to read that the number of your Insta followers is not the most important thing. I recently read an article about how Instagram is introducing all these changes and some bloggers and other influencers (couldn’t think of a better word) are worried that people will stop seeing their content, their daily posts, etc. I think it was Leandra from Man Repeller who said in the article that if your followers really care about your content, they will just go to your blog if they don’t see updates on social media. I thought she summed it up really well.
On a side note, I recently discovered your blog and I really love that your posts are so insightful and informative 🙂

08/30/2016 at 9:42 pmThank you so much Konstancja! Instagram did roll out new features that have affected people’s engagement, following, etc. but I agree with Leandra in that if your followers really like you and truly follow you for your content, they will seek you out with or without Instagram. So while it is harder for new bloggers or micro-bloggers to get noticed now, it’s not the end of the world and there are ways around it. Keep pushing, keep hustling, and you’ll get there. Please stay in touch and keep me posted on your blogging journey, I’d love to hear updates! xx

08/31/2016 at 9:57 pmEnjoyed this post! My fans absolutely love my Instagram, but it’s always a struggle to get them to leave that account in order to go to my blog. I find the most engagement coming from Instagram on days I post a new blog post (which is to be expected). Do you know of any other helpful ideas to encourage people to check out my website without a new blog post being available?

09/06/2016 at 12:14 pmHi Alli! Great comment and great question. So, I always circulate my old blog posts around on Facebook, it’s kind of hard to do that on Instagram but on Thursdays you could do a #throwbackthursday with a pic from one of your previous posts. You can also offer people something they can only get on your website. What’s your niche?

09/12/2016 at 1:38 pmAbsolutely the post I needed to read today! I have been going back and fourth on where to put my attention and you hit the nail on the head! I have built my “brand” on Instagram and if that goes away all of my hard work was for nothing essentially. Going to get started on my blog ASAP!

09/12/2016 at 10:02 pmExactly! You never want to put all your eggs in one basket, diversify like you would your retirement money, honey! What’s your Instagram handle?
Thanks so much for reading. I look forward to your comments. xx

06/21/2017 at 2:20 amWhat an amazing read! So happy I stumbled upon your blog. I have felt unmotivated to get back into my hobby of blogging for years since it’s gained so much popularity (especially on Instagram!!), but just recently took it up again. This is a great message 🙂 Focus on building a great blog first and foremost. Instagram is not EVERYTHING! Looking forward to reading more of your content! – ashieldannette.blogspot.com

06/22/2017 at 3:24 pm100%! Your blog is your lifeline and Instagram is just an added bonus. 🙂 But don’t get me wrong IG should still be used constantly to build and grow your blog but it’s not the end all if you’re struggling with it. Slow and steady wins the race. Thanks so much for reading Ash and I’m glad you’ve started blogging again! xx

06/11/2019 at 12:16 pmYeah, I’m always worried myself of whether to build my instagram and then my blog up. Will the followers be legit and want to read my stuff when there are hundreds of blogs out there? And can I stick to what I love to make it appealing to others?

10/08/2019 at 12:11 pmAbsolutely! You have to get really specific with your niche and the message you want to get across. “The riches are in the niches.” Being a general fashion, beauty, or travel blogger won’t cut it these days. Just START and adjust along the way. You’ll find your groove but the first step is starting! xx
