What The ONE Thing Taught Me About Business

the one thing gary keller

This may come as a surprise to some of you but I read, a lot. Like the minute I finish a book, I pick up another one. Reading helps keep my mind fresh and vocabulary sharp.

Anyway, I only read self-development/improvement books and I thought it would be fun to start sharing what I learn in a book club type series so if you don’t have the time to read, you can just come here and get the cliff notes. But in case you do want to read any of the books I talk about I won’t share every little detail #NOspoileralert. What I will share is what The ONE Thing taught me about business and how you can apply it to your blog.

key takeaways from the one thing:

Nothing is going to fall in your lap, even if it seems that way. You must visualize what you want for yourself and take action in getting there. Action is what will ultimately make it happen.

Simply put you get what you give. If you give only half your efforts you’ll get only half the results. If you really want to kill it in business, set aside one hour every day and do an action that will take you one step closer to your goals.

Maybe it’s emailing bloggers or writing a blog post or researching a product. Think about the life you want, burn that image into your head, and then take action in getting it one hour a day. That one hour a day leads to 7 hours a week and 28 hours a month.

In order to paint the big picture, you have to know which brush to use first.

I know you have lofty goals, we all do, but you have to start somewhere. So pick the thing that you need to do right now before you continue daydreaming about what you want to do “someday”. Start small and aim big.

80% of results come from 20% of your efforts.

It’s a sad, hard truth but a lot of the work you actually do isn’t what gets you most of your results. For bloggers, it’s not curating content or working with brands that gets you noticed, it’s promotion. And in the scheme of things promotion is something that should be paid more attention to but it’s just a small portion of what bloggers do. (Learn more about promotion here.)

Multitasking is physically impossible and should be avoided at all costs.

When you multitask you actually half-ass both of the things you’re trying to do. It’s not humanly possible to do more than one thing at one time using the same part of your brain. For example you can’t be on Instagram writing a comment and talking to your friend at the same time. When you do, you end up asking your friend to repeat what he/she said, which sets you back further than you would have been had you gone on Instagram after your conversation.

Multitasking just doesn’t work. Sorry! Do me (and yourself) a favor and DON’T multitask and see how much more efficient you are.

Our willpower is strongest in the morning, so set aside 4 hours of uninterrupted time to do what you have to do in the morning.

If you have a full-time job or you’re a parent or you go to the gym in the morning, wake up earlier and grind out your most important work in the first four hours you’re awake. You’ll thank me later.

There is no such thing as a “balanced life”, instead a truly fulfilled life involves counterbalancing. When you relationship suffers, give it more attention. When your work life suffers, give it more attention.

Success requires sacrifice. Know what you’re willing to give up before you commit to a life of hustle and you will never be disappointed or have any regrets. And remember your sacrifices aren’t forever, they’re just for now.

You may need to sacrifice watching your favorite tv show because your business needs some TLC or you may need to skip that hour in the morning to work your biz to be with your family. Don’t complain, adjust as needed.

If you ask a great question you will receive a great answer.

If you’re just starting your business or you’ve been in business for a while and you can’t find the answer you’re looking for anywhere, and I mean anywhere, then go in for the ask. The more specific your question, the better.

Every day you should ask yourself the “Focusing Question”: What’s the ONE Thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else will become easier or unnecessary?

That’s it. Ask this question regarding your business, every single day for the rest of your life and you’ll know exactly what to do at any given time.

Whether you’re trying to improve your business, relationship, health habits, etc. the Focussing Question can and should be asked. It will help you cut the crap and head right for the good stuff.

P.s. You can get The ONE Thing here.

Have you read The ONE Thing? What are your thoughts?
