Communication is key in any relationship whether it be business or romantic. The ways to effectively communicate in business can be tricky. You want to get your point across in a friendly tone without sounding like a pushover. You also want to form long-lasting professional relationships without crossing the line. It’s tough stuff!
#1 Keep it short & sweet
No one wants to hear you love an idea because it reminds you of your sister’s boyfriend’s brother. Instead communicate you like the idea and can’t wait to get started. The people you meet in business aren’t interested in hearing your life story. They don’t have time for that. They want to grow their business or resolve a problem, that’s it. Save your stories for happy hour.
#2 Tell a story to the consumer
If you want to tell your story, tell it to your customers. Facts tell, stories sell. Point blank. If you want to have sales in your business, tell a story that connects with your very specific target market. This technique is used heavily with Facebook ads. You see a ton of “business coaches” telling a story of how they went from being in debt to a $10,000 a month business and how you can get there, too. Even I tell a story with my course, The Blogger Blueprint.
#3 Be assertive
You have to show your coworkers you mean business, but that doesn’t give you permission to be a jerk. Being assertive is communicating with confidence and clarity. You know what you want and you’re going to lead the way in getting it. You don’t take no for an answer and you negotiate your way to a win/win for everyone… that is how to communicate in business.
#4 Don’t give advice, (unless asked for it)
We are SO quick to jump in with our advice and opinions during conversation, but guess what? Not everyone wants to hear it. Sometimes it is better to say nothing than something you may regret later. Most of the time we learn more by listening. Unless you’re the CEO or Beyonce, don’t give advice unless you’re asked for it.
How do you effectively communicate in business? Tell me below!
