In today’s digital age, people want to hang, work, and maintain relationships with people who are well-versed and know how to hustle. There’s nothing more interesting than surrounding yourself with people who know that a side hustle will be the best decision you ever made. Their energy and success will begin to rub off on you, but until you find “the one” why not take the leap and start your own side hustle so you can be the one people come to for inspiration?
a side hustle helps you discover your true passion
I always knew writing was “my thing” but I never knew how. I also made a pretty good teacher, but couldn’t see myself teaching kids the rest of my life.
After 4 years of what seemed to be failed attempts at both, I realized teaching people how to make their passion a career by writing about it, was my passion. (I’m a much better writer than speaker… umm have you seen my Snapchats? un: notanothrblonde)
A side hustle will be the best decision you ever made not only because you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to be your own boss but you’ll discover if it’s truly what you want to do. If something is your passion you’ll grind day in and day out with or without the money. A side hustle is a great way to test your skills and love for the trade because you don’t have to make a full financial sacrifice since you have your 9-5 to fall back on.
a side hustle opens up doors of opportunity
This should be a no brainer but I figure I’d put it out there anyway…
When you do things outside of your normal routine like volunteer, attend events, start a side hustle, you’re doing things to better yourself which is indirectly networking and branding.
Even if you don’t promote your new endeavor(s) on 10 social media platforms, word will spread that you’re known as the girl with the blog or the guy who sells antiques on eBay. This word of mouth news will start a conversation and conversations open doors. Simple as that.
a side hustle leads to more skills which leads to more money
When you make the choice to have a side hustle you sign a contract with yourself saying you will learn new skills ’til death do us part. No side hustle is going to survive without learning new skills, even if you’re really good at whatever your side hustle is, to be better you gotta’ get more skills.
I didn’t start a blog because it was easy and I thought I knew everything about blogging already. No. I came into this digital world because I knew I was a good writer with decent style. I didn’t know anything about the business side of things.
But over time I taught myself those skills because the more skills you have, the more marketable you become, which leads to more money you can make. Boom.
when plan a doesn’t work, your side hustle is plan b
Starting a side hustle is an experiment. You test out the idea if it’s something you really want to do and you also test the practicality if it’s something you could make a living from.
Say you go to school for teaching and no matter how hard you try you can’t seem to get a permanent job as a teacher. Amidst your discouragement, you realize teaching fashion blogging instead of kids is actually your purpose, (sound familiar?)… that is your Plan B. You could change majors, drop out of school completely like Mark Zuckerberg, or lose your job all to have your side hustle put you back on your feet.
Sometimes it takes “failing” at Plan A for you to learn Plan B was really Plan A all along.

06/07/2016 at 8:12 pmI have been thinking about this topic so much lately as I devote an increasing amount of time to my blog and watch it grow. Even if I don’t get to the point where I leave my 9-5, I’m learning so many new skills and really discovering what my passions are. Eventually my blog may even serve as a resume of sorts and help me find the right, fulfilling position. Awesome post Brittany!

06/07/2016 at 9:22 pmThat is so awesome Kasie! Keep it up. That’s actually what happened to me – I got a job using my blog as my resume. It is SO important. I think they may even do away with resumes in 5-10 years because everyone is on social media now it’s almost standard to refer to your following and/or side hustle to employers. Thank you so much for all your comments. They inspire me! xx
