No matter what age you’re turning, you always feel older than you are; at least that’s the case for me. Each year I observe, learn, and grow a little more and it’s really cool to see that reflected in my blog. I may not know it all, but I can tell you 24 lessons I’ve learned in 24 years…
1. Don’t take it personally
Things happen, and they happen for a reason. Don’t take it personally. Instead, seek the lesson to be learned, make the best of it, and move on.
2. Do take responsibility
Nothing screams sophistication more than holding yourself accountable for your actions. You create your life. It’s time to start owning up to it.
3. Be authentic
Easier said than done, I know. Try to be the best version of you that you can possibly be. People want the real you, not the carbon copy of someone else.
4. Live whole-heartedly
A lot of people just skate through life not tapping into their full potential. Don’t do that. Be a legend of your time. Make every day the best day of your life. Go after your dreams. Can’t find a job? Create one. This life has way too much to offer for you to just let it pass you by.
5. Be self-aware
We are full of energy. Literally, we exude different types of energy and vibes. Be aware of what vibes you’re putting out to the Universe. Are you a constant complainer or complimenter?
6. Get involved
Don’t be a wallflower. Get out there and join the fun. Do things you normally wouldn’t, you never know who you might meet or what opportunities may arise.
7. Don’t take yourself too seriously
The world is serious enough. Smile. Laugh. Be silly.
8. Compliment often
The best gift you can ever give someone is a compliment. It’s a win/win on both sides. What you admire in someone else is really what you admire in yourself.
9. Set a trend
Normal is boring. Stand out. Express yourself. Be a trendsetter. Wear, say, and do things that are out of the ordinary.
10. Be the person you want to meet
I say this all the time because I mean it! Are you happy with the choices you’ve made thus far? Do you like the person you see everyday? If your answer is no, get goin’ on becoming that person you’d want to hang with!
11. Dance
It’s fun, flirty, and free.
12. Forgive
True forgiveness will allow your enemies to become allies.
13. Read
Books are food for the soul. Expand your library and read as often as possible.
14. Laugh
Laughing is clinically proven to relieve stress, depression, and anxiety. In fact there are “laughing clubs” across the world that are supposed to improve your all around well being.
15. Live unapologetically
No is an acceptable answer. You do not owe anyone anything. The choices you make and how you live your life are congruent to your beliefs. If it works for you, stick with it and make no apologies.
16. Control your thoughts
Sounds easy enough but controlling what you think is quite challenging but well worth the effort. What you think about you bring about. If you keep stressing about how you don’t have money, the longer you won’t have money. Control yourself, think positively.
17. Love
Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, identified love as the single most important human emotional need. Provide love as often as possible. Too much is never enough.
18. Admire the beauty in all things
It’s crazy how absolutely beautiful this planet is. The difference in terrain from New Jersey to California is amazing! Take note of every little detail around you.
19. Be spontaneous
Some of the best experiences I’ve had were due to spontaneity, (i.e. cliff jumping, flying to California for 2 weeks, meeting the Kardashians… yes that happened and yes I loved every minute of it).
20. Stay judgement free
It is extremely hard to see situations and people without judgement, but once you master it, it is life transforming.
21. Be grateful
Keep a gratitude journal and write down 3 things you’re grateful for every day. Oh, and remember to always say thank you. “Thank you” is music to everyone’s ears.
22. Be adaptable
Life happens, as we well know. And sometimes there’s not a thing we can do about it… except adapt. Go with the flow of life, because whether you like it or not, things keep moving with or without your approval.
23. Listen
One of the most underrated skills of all time. Many people are chomping at the bit to say their piece before the other person is done speaking. Stop, listen, and fully digest what is being said before you dive in guns blazing.
24. Stay present
The past is only in your head and the future doesn’t exist. Stay focused on what is happening right now, in this very moment.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learned at your age?
xx
